This ‘birth control’ method has been the go-to method for a lot of people, particularly those of Irish Catholic background. Catholicism has forced people to use these riskier methods of birth control because they aren’t allowed to rely on condoms or hormonal birth control. The pope is not too fond of those of us who want to have any kind of recreational sex (sex for pleasure), and puts the moral judgment on any of us who seek out methods of birth control, calling us sinners.
I’m not Catholic, so I don’t really give a fuck what the pope says, but it’s kind of a serious societal problem. The more we as a society teach teenagers to be ashamed of their sexuality and to deny them any kind of sexual education or agency over their own bodies, the more we have issues like the rampant spread of STIs, unplanned pregnancy and a general lack of understanding and insight into our own sexualities. We also have cultivated an incredibly repressed sexual society, which results in the sexual exploitation of children, the rape and sexual assault of women (and men as well), the oppression of our LGBTQ individuals and communities, and due to the intense shame we are spoon fed with regards to our sexuality, we’re constantly trying to fight against our kinks or natural ethical urges because some religious leader tells us it’s wrong or sinful to feel that way.
We have a lot of work to do to heal our society, sexually, and educate the next generation. The withdrawal method is a legit option if you have been fully educated on all your options and you aren’t being pressured by a religious and patriarchal ‘all-knowing’ parental figure, sitting up there on his fancy church throne and telling you that you are ‘sinning’ just because you don’t want to get pregnant.
