A bachelor party is the same as a stag party. It’s the party that a man has with all his male buddies right before he gets married. Traditionally this party happens the night before the wedding, although these days it often takes place a few weeks or months before because nobody wants to be super hung over for the wedding day. Some of the things that happen at bachelor parties are; drinking a shit ton of booze, hiring a stripper, going to a strip club (and getting the groom a lap dance), going to a wrestling match or big fight, going to some other kind of sports event, going to Vegas and gambling, getting a prostitute for the groom, sharing feelings.
Often the groom gets massively plastered because his friends will continuously feed him shots and we all know how hard it is to say no to free shots. Sometimes alcohol poisoning occurs and some might even consider that to be a sign of a successful bachelor party. The idea is to celebrate the groom’s ‘last leg of single hood’ and his last chance to be all buddy buddy with his guy friends before his wife-to-be chains him to her for all eternity. Most wedding traditions are deeply saturated in sexist and gender stereotypical traditions. The man is suppose to resist getting caught and hooked into marriage, the woman is suppose to get her man to propose to her and then trap him with marriage for the rest of his life. You know, because marriage does so much for women in our society and it’s so radically harmful for men.
These days, bachelor parties still happen but they tend to be a bit more varied and less stereotypical. A lot of men aren’t interested in getting completely shit faced as that’s not really how they normally spend their time anyway. They may choose to turn it into a weekend of awesome by renting a cabin with their closest friends, swimming and barbecuing and just bonding with the friends they’ve known for so long. Male friendships are beginning to look different as it becomes more socially acceptable for men to show affection and love for their male friends. There’s a lot less stigma when it comes to sharing feelings and talking about serious emotional issues, and men are able to lean on each other emotionally, much more so now than in the past. So a bachelor party can just be a time of bonding and sharing experiences, not a time where everyone gets trashed and act like idiots.
1. I hooked up with this stripper at my best friend’s bachelor party…or at least I thought she was a stripper. Turned out it was the groom’s other best friend’s sister who just dressed super slutty. She ended up giving me a lap dance anyway, which was hot. I’m still not sure why she was at the bachelor party in the first place…
