Ankle cuffs are usually used in bondage. They are sex cuffs for the ankles. Basically if you want to make sure that your partner is completely bound and tied up and has no chance of escaping, use both handcuffs and ankle cuffs. You probably need some rope too.
Usually bondage cuffs or restraints are made from leather and padded with either soft leather or fur. They’re designed to be safer than the traditional handcuffs that folks use to use in sexual bondage situations. You really want to think about comfort when investing in a pair of these. Handcuffs aren’t designed for safety, they’re designed for immobilization and the prevention of escape, and there’s a much higher possibility of nerve damage and other wrist or hand injuries when using regular handcuffs.
When I was young, probably around 12, I read Gerald’s Game by Stephen King. Probably not 12-year-old reading material, but I was on a King Kick, and this one sounded interesting – a woman handcuffed to a bed and, essentially, to her own thoughts and demons. Oh and (spoilers alert), there’s a creepy gravedigger dude who comes in and terrorizes her and even though she thinks he’s a figment of her imagination at first, she realizes that if she doesn’t get out of those handcuffs, he’s going to come back that night and kill her. And how did she get in this situation with the handcuffs anyway? Well she and her husband were playing a sex game and he had her all handcuffed to the bed post in their isolated cabin in the woods. She changes her mind and decides she doesn’t want to play and she asks him to unlock the cuffs and let her go. He pretends that she’s only objecting as part of the game and he continues to start having sex with her. She freaks out and kicks him in the junk (deservedly so) and he has a heart attack and dies, leaving her handcuffed to the bed with only a tiny pair of panties on. And luckily there’s a water class on the bedside table. And though she can’t reach it to drink out of it, she does this ingenious thing where she rolls a tiny receipt into a drinking straw and uses it to sip water from the glass to stay alive. This takes up an entire chapter in the book and it’s one of the most exhilarating pieces of fiction I’ve ever read. Later, she uses that same glass to cut her wrist so she can use her own blood as a lubricant to slide out of the cuffs.
My point? If you’re going to go all bondage (and I suggest you try it out), go for leather restraints, not old-fashioned dated handcuffs.
