If you ever wanted proof that porn stars do more than fuck on film, look no further than British porn star Johnny Anglais. Johnny made the news last year because some people felt Johnny’s day job and night job didn’t mix. What was his day job, you ask? Johnny, whose real name is Benedict Garrett, was head of personal, social and health education at Beal High School in Ilford from 2008 to 2010.
When his school found out about Johnny’s moonlighting as a stripper, escort and adult performer, they called a disciplinary committee hearing. Of course, Johnny ended up in all the headlines last year after he won the legal right to return to teaching. Despite winning, he hasn’t returned to teaching. Instead, Johnny’s turned to the porn world and spends his free time publicly speaking about the sex industry.
He’s spoken at multiple university debates as well as been an invited speaker on various BBC debate shows. It’s for just those debating skills that Johnny Anglais has made international headlines again. He’s been scheduled to speak at the prestigious Oxford Union. The same Oxford Union which has invited numerous celebrity speakers over the years, from Winston Churchill to Stephen Hawking to Richard Dawkins.
Johnny joins a debate team made up of Dennis Hof, founder of the Nevada’s Moonlite Bunny Ranch and Dr. Fiona Godlee, editor-in-chief of the British Medical Journal. They’ll be arguing for the legalization of prostitution against Julie Bindel, author and co-founder of Justice for Women, feminist activist Finn Mackay and campaigner Ellie Levenson.
Speaking of the debate, Johnny has said “Our traditional prudish attitude and lack of confidence by many parents and teachers to deal with the ‘birds and the bees’ at an appropriate and relevant level has proven to fail our young people. We have the highest rates of STI and pregnancy amongst them in Europe: this needs to change.”
“Blaming it on such things as porn and prostitution is simply a scapegoat for our shameful national attitude to sex.”
We can’t help but agree with anyone working toward a less shameful attitude around sex. After all, sex is…well…awesome.
