Israel Becomes First Country to Ban Revenge Porn
Yifat Kariv, a member of Israeli parliament, recently had an incident brought to her attention. After a man separated from his partner, he posted a video of his former partner having sex to a mobile messaging application, which was then forwarded along to tens of thousands of people. This incident was the driving force in her bid to pass a bill to stop revenge porn.
On Monday Israeli Parliament approved a bill that will prohibit the online distribution of video or still images that depict sexual content or nudity without the subjects full consent. The victims of revenge porn will be known as victims of sexual harassment and the offenders could see themselves facing up to five years in jail. After the bill was passed in it’s third and final reading in legislature Kariv said,
“We are witnessing more and more cases of sexual assaults that were filmed and distributed in public without restraint and without limits; this legislative intervention is necessary and will help fight the shocking phenomenon of ‘virtual rape,’”
A similar law was recently passed in California , but Israel is the first entire country to put such a ban into place. In California is alot more lenient than Israel however. The penalty is up to 6 months in jail and a $1000 fine. End Revenge Porn, an organization that promotes legislation to ban revenge porn and offers resources to people who have been victims of it, worked with the California State Senate to create the bill.
Notorious revenge porn king Hunter Moore previously was handed a different type of punishment by hacker group Anonymous. His new website was shut down and purchases were made using his credit card.
