The Pew Research Center has released a study on online video content, and have reported that 12% of all American’s report viewing pornography online, nearly doubling since they last released a report on the subject in 2007.

The study focused on adult Internet users and their interactions with viewing video content online, ranging from genres like Comedy and Educational, to sources such as YouTube or Vine. Comedy took the top spot, with 58% of all adult Internet users viewing video content online vs 31% in 2007. Adult content took the bottom slot, 12% with doubling from 6% in 2007.

The study follows another recently released by Juniper Research who says 250 million people will be watching pornography on their mobile device by the year 2017, and another by Metacard names the United Stated the worlds #1 host of online adult content.

When reviewing the information gathered, one can see a big gap between genders, with 25% of males admitting they have viewed adult content, and only 8% of females admitting the same. Pew does state for themselves that the low numbers may ‘reflect a reluctance to report the behavior among some adults,’ meaning many subjects probably lied.

Pew also identifies free video sharing and streaming sites such as YouTube as the driving force for the increased consumption of online video content. The study reveals that online adult usage of video sharing sites skyrocketed to 72% from 33% in 2006.
