The American pornography industry has put another halt on production as more performers have come forward saying they have contracted the virus that causes AIDS.

An actress known as Cameron Bay was the first to go public after a routine test showed a positive result on August 20, 2013. Immediately a nationwide moratorium on shooting pornography, was issued by The Free Speech Coalition (FSC), a Los Angeles based trade organization for the adult industry. On September 3, 2013, shortly after the moratorium was lifted, an actor known as Rod Daily, who was romantically linked to to Bay, came out on twitter saying:

“Drumroll please!! I’m 32 years old and I’m HIV positive. Acute HIV, which means I recently was infected.”

Daily did not officially report it to the industry group so it did not result in a new moratorium, however on September 6, 2013, another call to stop shooting came after another performer who tested positive was reported to the Free Speech Coalition by an industry-affiliated doctor. It was not confirmed if this was Daily’s claim, or a new third party.

Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) — a group that backed Measure B, a law to use condoms when filming in Los Angeles County last year — said a fourth adult film performer has contacted his group in the last week. Weinstein said:

“I can confirm that a male performer came to us and indicated that he had become infected with HIV.”

However, the Free Speech Coalition spokeswoman Joanne Cachapero stated:

“We have no evidence of a fourth performer testing positive for HIV. This information came from AHF who is currently trying to push regulation on the industry. … It is extremely likely that this situation is more posturing for AHF’s political agenda.”

The AHF has been a strong promoter of the Measure B law, while FSC has been fighting it saying it is a violation of performer’s right to freedom of speech. Weinstein stated his thoughts on the current way the industry is organized:

“If you think that Russian roulette is a great way to protect workers, then the present system is perfect.”
