And the award goes to… Krista Ford, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s niece who on Wednesday tweeted:

“Stay alert, walk tall, carry mace, take self-defence classes & don’t dress like a whore. #DontBeAVictim #StreetSmart.”

The poorly thought-out tweet went out last evening in response to a series of rapes in the Annex neighbourhood. Backlash was swift and harsh, and prompts us to use the cliche “payback is a bitch”. Here is a sample:

@roxierichter @kristaford Apparently the rest of us whores deserve rape but she can still dress in next to nothing and be a “not whore”.

Also, a recent sexual assault survivor, Alice Moran, posted an open letter on her Facebook page in response to Ford’s classless comment.

It’s odd that Ford would make a comment like that. After all, her twitter picture is of her dressed in a skimpy black dress not to mention that she was the captain of the Toronto Triumph in the Lingerie Football League.

In the end, she apologized for her tweet stating:

“What I meant to say was that women should take measures to protect themselves and be very careful not to place themselves or allow themselves to be placed in vulnerable positions that may compensate their safety. It’s important that the public knows that my comments do not reflect my family’s beliefs.”
