“Sexytime: The Post-Porn Rise of the Pornoisseur” is definitely a fun book to have on your coffee table. Despite primarily featuring porn posters printed from the late-60s until the early-80s, it hardly has any nudity, so you can get away with leaving it out when family members come for wholesome visits.

A Great Coffee-table book dedicated to…Porn Movie Posters!

Easy Alice posterThe book is big, and just the right amount of thickness (and no, I’m not talking penis size here). That means there’s a plethora of interesting porn posters from yesteryears to keep you entertained. Although the focus of the book is the visual aspect of the posters, I would have loved if there were more commentary on the posters throughout the book. For those unfamiliar with porn from the 70s, it would have been really cool to get some background on what’s included. An artist or two who was actually involved in the design process would have been a bonus.

Content

However, focusing on the content, the variety is excellent. Being a product of the 1980s, my personal preference would have been for more content specific to that decade, but it’s hard to complain in this case. The majority of the book’s posters are from the 1970s and they range from run of the mill porn flicks like “Easy Alice”, to more exploitive fare like the Soviet(!) “Librianna, Bitch of the Black Sea” and “SS Girls” (which had zero-known actors and was made without a single porn star mention).

Interestingly, some of the posters are just god awful –and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Check out “Born Erect”, which looks like it was drawn by a 5 year old and “Snow Job” which is just a terrible mash-up of unerotic stills from the film. It’s pretty several porn film posterscool to see what passed as acceptable advertising in the porn world back in the day and compare how far the porn industry has come in respect to marketing and branding its product. Aside popular porn stars and directors who were sometimes featured on these posters, they often weren’t all that representative.

Verdict

If you want a history lesson on porn posters this is not the book to get, however, if you want an oversized coffee-book that your guests might enjoying flipping through the pages as you bring refreshments, Sexytime is for you. And hey, it might even get you laid.
