Porn Studies: The Hottest New Academic Journal On The Block

Whether people want to admit it or not, porn is a huge and always growing industry. Porn sites account for 30% of all internet traffic. They actually account for more online traffic than Twitter, Amazon and Netflix combined!

That’s why it should be no surprise that ‘Porn Studies,’ the first ever academic journal about pornography has recently launched. The debut publication contains 30 peer-reviewed articles ranging in topics from Anti/pro/critical porn studies to Psychology and pornography: some reflections to Gonzo, trannys, and teens – current trends in US adult content production,

“the first dedicated, international, peer-reviewed journal to critically explore those cultural products and services designated as pornographic.”

The journal comes from a pro-porn standpoint and has already been heavily criticized by anti-porn activists for “glamorizing porn culture” and has already received more media interest prior to launching than the majority of academic publications receive over the course of decades. A professor of cultural studies, Feona Attwood and a reader in sexual cultures, Clarissa Smith wrote the following in the introduction to the first issue:

“Recent years have seen a resurgence of public discussions (and scares) about a series of pornography-related topics, perhaps most notably the expansions of pornography across the internet, its putative links to rape and sexual violence, and erotic life-styling or the oft-cited “sexualization of culture.”

‘Porn Studies’ is the scholarly approach to responding to these discussions. The journal is available online for free for a limited time so anyone can check out all of the papers in the first issue.
