Girls Gone Wild creator Joe Francis has been sentenced to 270 days in jail and three years probation following a January 2011 incident of an assault on a young woman.

The incident on January 29, 2011 began with Francis meeting three young women at a college graduation party at the Supper Club in Hollywood. The women jumped into Francis’ limo believing they would be taken back to their car but ended up inside a gated area inside of Francis’ Bel Air home. Deputy city attorney Mitchell Fox explained that Francis seemed to be interested in one of the women, and when he attempted to pull her away from her friends, one of them interviened. Francis then:

“jumped on the friend, took her to the ground, choked her, slammed her head against the ground, dragged her across the ground, and when she got back up, did it several more times”

The women threatened to call the police, which Francis replied:

“go ahead and call the police. I own the police.”

Eventually he was charged with three counts of false imprisonment, one count of assault by means likely to cause great bodily injury, and one count of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime. On top of the jail time and probation, Los Angeles Superior Court judge Nancy Newman also ordered Francis to undertake anger management courses and attend 52 psychological counseling sessions. His bail has been set at $250m, allowing him to remain out of jail until his case is processed for appeal.

Estimated to hold a net worth of $150 million, Francis, 40, created his empire with his amateur porn series ‘Girls Gone Wild’, a series that filmed young, adolescent, usually intoxicated women performing lewd sexual acts. The series founded in 1997, generated $20 million in sales in its first two years and went on to become a piece of pop culture by including artists such as Eminem and Snoop Dogg in their videos, but the company filed for bankruptcy in February of 2013.
