Hot Sex Under The Sea: Sea Slug Can Regenerate Penis In A Day
Don’t watch the Little Mermaid or Finding Nemo after reading this story. Your perception of cuddily singing lobsters and angelfish will be obsolete!
Japanese researchers spearheaded by biologist Ayami Sekazawa recently made this discovery (which was published in the Journal of Biology Letters): there’s a type of sea slug that can regenerate its penis in 24 hours after discarding it.
To observe the animal, which is referred to as Chromodoris Reticulata scientifically, the researchers went to the coral reefs off Okinawa, Japan during its April to June mating season.
What they found is that these sea slugs lead very strange sex lives. The Chromodoris has both female and male reproductive organs on either end of their bodies. When they have sex, they pass along their sperm to each other.
Furthermore, after copulation the slugs shed their penises and after roughly a day, a new penis re-appears. The researchers found that these slugs had a coiled penis in which they would replace the discarded one.
Only a handful of animals are known to lose their penises. They include the weaving spiders, some land slugs and a sea creature called the Periwinkle. However, what separates the Chromodoris Reticulata from those other animals is the fact that it’s only known one that can lose and re-grow its penis. In essence, they are the John Wayne Bobbit of sea slugs.
