Orgasm News: Do you have mentors in the adult film industry, especially when you broke in?
Kelly: It was weird. People have asked me, “How was you first scene? Were you uncomfortable?” The funny thing is I’ve been an avid porn watcher since being a kid. I watched my first porn film when I was nine because I found somebody’s stash so I’ve always been around sexuality.
Being born and raised in Japan, I think if I had any mentors it’s just would be all the porn that I watched. It made me more comfortable being sexual and I didn’t think that being sexual was ever a bad thing. I know that in my first year, because I don’t have a background in performance. I did watch a lot of porn just to see how girls acted on camera.
There’s a lot of stuff in my first year of porn that I watch now, the few times I do watch my own stuff, I’m like, “Wow, that’s not good at all.” I’m emulating somebody else. I don’t know if I have any specific mentors. A lot of that was also because there’s not a lot of mentoring as far as plus sized porn is concerned.
Orgasm News: You’ve been in the adult film industry for 6, years now. What aspects of the adult film industry do you like?
Kelly: I really like the honesty of the sexuality of the performers. You know, obviously, porn sex is not the same as real sex that couples have at home. I know that from personal experience. And a lot of porn performance is exactly that. It’s performance. You know, you’re trying to portray a fantasy, so that people can watch it and jerk off…That’s our goal as performers.
I really like the process of coming to set, going through make-up. You know, listening to the director, seeing what he wants to shoot and trying to do the best I can with the male talent I’m working with or the female talent and to make the best kind of chemistry on the camera that I can.
I’m not a big fan of all the drama that happens. There’s a lot of drama in the industry. But I think that the parts I like in the industry are all the fun parts, if that makes sense.
Orgasm News: I should have said this right from the start, Kelly, congratulations on being a Fleshlight girl!
Kelly: Thank you so much! I was so surprised when they asked me because they asked me pretty much out of the blue. I was asked at [the 2011] AVN show. I guess it’s called AEE, Adult Entertainment Expo, in January, in Vegas. Had a very quick lunch meeting with Steve Shubin and his wife, who owns Fleshlight. And I kind of thought, Okay, well, I’ll have a meeting with them, and I’ll probably hear from them 2 or 3 months from now. Because during the meeting, they had said that they were considering doing a plus size performer, but they hadn’t really decided on doing it. But I guess during the lunch meeting they were really happy with me.
So, right at the end of the meeting they [asked] of I didn’t…mind getting on a plane once getting back to L.A. and fly out to Austin, where [the Fleshlight] headquarters are, but we didn’t actually release the Flesh Light until July, at the beginning of the events out in Vegas.
Orgasm News: When you went to Austin, how was the process like there?
Kelly: Well the Fleshlight offices are absolutely gorgeous. You can’t tell that that’s what it is from the outside. It’s kind of an industrial business park, where all the businesses look exactly the same. But you walk inside and interestingly because neither one of them are Asian, there’s a lot of Asian aesthetic inside their offices, from the furniture to the art on the walls to, you know, just everything…And the first day was photography. Just kind of model photos.
And the second day was molding, which is very kind of technical, where you’re in what actually is like an OBGYN table with your legs up in the air. And two guys come in and they put the modeling goo on your parts. And then they put plaster on it, so they’re making a mold for the people to make the toys.
So we did my pussy and then we did my butt and then my mouth. Then another day of video and photography work, after that, just for promotional. Which is the stuff that you see when you go to fleshlight.com/KellyShibari. And then I was back on a plane. And then there was a long period of me waiting.
Orgasm News: So how has getting a Fleshlight helped your career?
Kelly: I’m a big fan of working on your own personal branding. I have a blog that really tries to teach girls, as well as companies, on how to use visual media to work on brand. And I really think that my social media presence, as well as me seeking conferences and things like that, is what helped them choose me, because as a performer, I’m not necessarily any better or worse than a handful of other performers who are out there.
Plus size porn is not overly acrobatic. A lot of it is straight, vanilla boy/girl or girl/girl, and if you were to choose on just beauty, there were a lot of girls that they could have chosen, but with my social media presence I think that they felt that they were going to try a new niche that they should work with somebody; that actually had a background in marketing.
As far as my career is concerned, it’s definitely given me a lot more exposure. I’m able to do interviews like this. Plus size porn is something that was such an ultra niche that unless you are into bigger performers, you don’t really seek it out. It’s not something that you would go, “I’m going to type in porn on Google and see what pops up.” In the first page there’s plus size stuff. That doesn’t happen. As far as my career is concerned, being a plus size girl, and being singled out among a bunch of other performers who are not in that niche has actually made me a little bit more visible to a lot of new fans.
