Orgasm News Interviews John Stagliano
John Stagliano is a legend in the porn industry and he has made his mark with his company Evil Angel. Orgasm News had a chance to speak to him about his new movie Voracious, Measure B, and his experience in the ever-changing porn industry.
Orgasm News: How does Voracious separate itself from other adult DVDs being released today?
John Stagliano: It’s probably longer, I’m not sure that is a good thing. I need to learn how to be brief. Seriously, I feel tremendous guilt when one of my scenes goes to long.
Orgasm News: How did you come up with the idea for Voracious?
John Stagliano: My main act as a male stripper from 1979 to 1984 was as Dracula. I wore chains underneath and stripped to The Finale to Swan Lake played at 45 RPMs instead of 33. So when my general manager Christian Mann made the observation that Vampire movies were popular now I realized that it was time for me to finally do a Vampire movie.
With DVD sales the way they are I knew I could not do a movie with a high budget like Fashionistas. This was an intriguing thing to me because I don’t like big crews when I shoot. I became successful shooting with very little crew. I love it.
Orgasm News: As a filmmaker, what are the most important things that you keep in mind when you produce, direct, or write a film?
John Stagliano: What is my market and how does that jive with want I like and know well personally. I only feel I can do good work if I know the subject I am working with well. Then my focus is on being creative with all the tools available. A good idea can be your best looking production value.
Orgasm News: Your studio company Evil Angel is considered one of the best adult film studios in the world. What makes Evil Angel different from other adult studios?
John Stagliano: My guiding principle is I want to sell movies I like. For some reason what I like has found a market. This makes my life a lot easier.
Orgasm News: You’ve been in the adult industry for a few decades now. What are the most significant changes you have experienced?
John Stagliano: Porn has experienced a tremendous boom creatively and culturally with the advent of the Internet. If asked in advance would I trade personal financial success (like if the DVD was still a great source of income) for the world today with the Internet and all the value it brings into my life, I have to say that I would not. My life is so much more exciting dealing with the internet, even with all it’s piracy problems, then if somehow my market had been protected.
Orgasm News: Measure B is an important topic in the LA porn industry for obvious reasons. What is your take on this controversial measure? What are your thoughts on porn stars like Steve St. Croix, Tera Patrick, and Ron Jeremy, among others, who are part of the video campaign against Measure B?
John Stagliano: This is a fight for personal freedom. What gives Michael Weinstein the right to control another persons body? Are all porn performers subject to the control of the state? Everything seems to be the business of the state (California or the federal government) I just hope they leave me with enough freedom to be creative and survive. Don’t waste your vote, vote Libertarian, the only party that protects us on principle.
Orgasm News: What is a little known fact about you not too many people know?
John Stagliano: I have an over inflated view of my past athletic achievements…oh wait, probably people already know that.
