James Franco’s Gay-Themed Film Teaser Released

A 90-second teaser for James Franco’s re-imagining of the 1980s “Cruising” has been released.

Both James Franco and filmmaker Travis Mathews collaborated on the teaser for “James Franco’s 40 Minutes”, which features several gay men looking seductively into the camera.

The film, which does not yet have a release date, will be making its way into film festivals later this year. It is a re-imagining of 40 minutes of footage that was cut by Warner Brothers from the original film because it would have made it an X-rated film rather than an R-rated one. The original footage has since been lost.

The original film released in 1980 starred Al Pacino as a police officer who slips into New York’s gay BDSM underground in order to crack a case involving a murderer who is targeting gay men.

Filmmaker Travis Mathews who is known for his films dealing with the gay community told PagerMag.com: “I wanted to show 2012 guys and their interpretation of cruising because I feel like in a lot of the ways in the gay community the idea of cruising is sort of a lost art,”

He continued: “Everybody has their phones now, it’s not like how you would go to the park or go into the bar and a lot of serious cruising would happen.”

Mathews explained about the process of creating the teaser: “James basically asked me to take the weekend to see if there was anything having to do with ‘Cruising’ that was exciting and inspiring for me…So I thought, ‘why don’t we do something that’s like James Franco’s re-imagined 40 minutes from ‘Cruising’.”
