Major Leaguer Yunel Escobar Dons Anti-Gay Slur
A sharp-eyed baseball fan took a picture of Toronto Blue Jays’ player Yunel Escobar donning a gay slur on his eye black this week.
The words “TU ERE MARICON” which translate to “You are a Faggot” in Spanish were visible in the photo taken by Flickr user James_in_TO.
The Blue Jays have posted a statement on their website in regards to the incident: “The Toronto Blue Jays do not support discrimination of any kind nor condone the message displayed by Yunel Escobar during Saturday’s game. The club takes this situation seriously and is investigating the matter.
It continues: “Alex Anthopoulos, Sr. VP Baseball Operations and General Manager will be available to the media [September 18, 2012] at Yankee Stadium and we expect him to be joined by Yunel Escobar, Manager John Farrell and Coach Luis Rivera…”
James Greenhalgh who snapped the picture on Saturday said: “This is something Escobar wore on the field…He knew the possibility that a member of the Red Sox noticed it and commented on it, or even the umpiring crew. This is a bad word. It’s a homophobic slur…There are a million insults he could have used that would have been funny, this was not one of them … This was a mistake I hope he learns and he will never make again.”
There were rumors in recent months that Escobar might be traded. It seems likely that, with this move, Escobar’s time in Toronto could be coming to end soon.
